GPA is Important!
GPA is important to most schools. Your academic scores give them an idea or your tendencies in certain courses. When you enter your coursework into PTCAS and submit your application, PTCAS will take about 3 weeks to go through all your coursework to verify that it matches your transcripts and they will calculate your overall GPA and your prerequisite GPA. Schools are interested in both, however, I would say they are more interested in your prerequisite GPA because it relates more to the classes that your will be taking in PT school but thats not fact.
If you have any bad grades in your prerequisite classes (I would consider "bad" lower than a B-) then you should try to retake that class or classes to improve your grade. This will boost your GPA a little more which could be the difference in a school accepting you or rejecting you.

Here is a breakdown of what GPA you should be aiming for: >3.90 -extremely competitive 3.75-3.89 -very competitive 3.50-3.74 -competitive 3.25-3.49 -average 3.00-3.24 -below average <3.00 -not competitive |

Retaking Classes
There are always a lot of rumors about retaking classes and to be honest I still don't know if I have the truth or not, but here's what I know.
If you have a "bad" grade (lower than a B-), then you should retake the class/classes if your time and schedule permit it. With class retake grades I have heard that schools do one of two things. 1. They will combine your original grade from the class with the retake grade to get an average, or 2. they will completely wipe out the original grade and just look at the retake grade. Either way, and this should go without saying, if you retake a class, make sure you do better the second time!!
